Why hold a conference?
California has the opportunity to come together across state, regional and local stakeholders with the vision, policies, and funding to invest in travel integration. To address the urgency of the situation and these exciting opportunities, a two-day conference event was held in May 2018. A total of 203 invitees and speakers participated in the two-day event, mixing representatives of state-funded public transportation operators and agencies, academia, transportation network companies, other government agencies, consulting firms, selected solution vendor representatives, and other parties identified by the Steering and Advisory Committees.

 
 

California travelers face a disconnected transportation system that is difficult to use and that leads to high costs and declining ridership on public transport. At the same time, technology innovations are already available that make travel simple and reliable through the push of a button. While individual public transportation and planning agencies have taken significant steps towards coordinating service and modernizing some aspects of travel such as fare payment and wayfinding, there are additional improvements to be made in California.

We have the opportunity to change how Californians move around the state, bringing together existing and emerging transportation options to grow ridership and accommodate more riders in the system; and delivering service more effectively and with better consumer value. This effort will require collaboration, collective problem solving, and the creation of opportunities for technology to transform the traveler experience.

CalSTA and its partners seek to facilitate a process to integrate travel across multiple modes throughout the state to directly address the problem. This involves governance, coordinating routes and schedules, creating seamless transfers among and across modes, improving the availability of travel data in an open and accessible format, sharing costs and resources between providers, and facilitating easier trip planning and payment for travelers. To kick-start this effort, Cal-ITP held a two-day conference event in May 2018 that offered participants an opportunity to learn more about integrated travel concepts, ask questions, and provide opinion on a statewide integrated travel initiative to help shape progress and create a more unified transportation system.
